Gifts given to the Horry County Memorial Library are accepted under the provisions of the Code of Laws of South Carolina (4-9-36) and other applicable local, state, and federal laws. Except as otherwise specified in this policy, the Library will only accept unrestricted gifts.

Gifts may be deductible for federal income tax purposes under Section 179(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. However, the Library accepts no responsibility for establishing or verifying the value of donated items for that purpose.

Gifts are subject to acceptance by the Library.

The following guidelines will be used:

·       Library materials will be accepted with the understanding that the Library’s Collection Development Policy will be used to determine whether donated items are added to the collection. Items not added will be handled as best serves the Library. Materials which are not outright gifts will not be accepted.

·       Money, real property, and/or securities will be accepted with restrictions only if those restrictions are acceptable to the Library Board.

·       Gifts of art, antiques, and museum objects will not be accepted for permanent display unless they are solicited or given for a specific use acceptable to the Library Board. This policy does not apply to artwork and objects on temporary display within a library.

The Library Director is responsible for the establishment and administration of this policy.
